#001: Detour / What Time Is It There?
Steady Diet of Film is pleased to announce our new bi-weekly film discussion podcast, hosted by Erin Donovan and Claudia Meza.
Gateway experiences, either it be food, music or some bad habit, we've all had that moment where we unexpectedly get introduced to our brand new favorite thing. In our inaugural episode we discuss the films that made us the film nerds we are today. We discuss What Time Is It There? (directed by Tsai Ming-liang) and Detour (directed by Edgar G. Ulmer).
So what was your gateway film?
Download here.
Show notes:
- Detour is available as a free, full-length stream.
- The infamous pigeon scene from What Time Is It There?

Mishu, Time Bandits is such a good one. I bet that was a lot of people's gateway film.
Charles, I just deleted the file in my iTunes podcasts and redownloaded it, it's now 35:42 which is the whole shebang. I think sometimes iTunes can be a little wonky but deleting and redownloading can often be the fix.

Detour is a great choice for a gateway film, I can imagine that one especially blowing open the path into the noir genre.
For me, Mulholland Dr. was probably the film that really did the most to awaken my (already growing) interest in film. It hit me like a ton of bricks and showed me just how powerful the cinema could be. I wrote about it here, along with many screenshots:

Found you on twitter via kellydeal. Love down to earth film perspective, so this blog is perfect.
The film that really blew my mind when I was ten was "Time Bandits" by Terry Gilliam. He's been really amazing for a long time, a visual wonder.
And another one that just made me want to seek out strange films is "The Loss of Sexual Innocence", although I'm not a huge fan of Mike Figgis.
